AUTHOR: MINAKKSI HARSHANA

OMG I so excited with the colour forecast for the forth coming season. Yes you heard it right. This spring/summer is all about mixing dynamic Brights with novel neutrals to create a harmonious balance.

So here they are… People!
Firstly and by far my most cherished:

Poppy red

This seductive and sensual poppy red looks amazing on all colour complexions and is every women’s wardrobe essential . Did you know that wearing red boost your self-esteem and make you feel and come over more confident? It's also said that women wearing red are more attractive to men o_O !

So girls get the poppy red colour out specialy when valentine day is around the corner ! P.S pair your skinny jeans in this tone with the white chiffon blouse for the sexy as well and simple look.

Emerald

This colour is my personal favourite. This electric jewel tone is the colour of 2013.Lively ,radian, lush and sexy at the same time this colour always surprise me with its elegance and beauty. Emerald is considered to be the talisman of the goddess Venus and it represents faith, goodness and kindness.

Nectarine

A bright bubbly citrus orange with coral undertones this colour looks fresh and vibrant and suits the indian skin tone as well. This is one orange that those who claim they can’t wear orange can actually pull off.

Wear with neutrals like linen and grey or with brights like poppy red and turquoise.look for lacy blouses in this juicy tint to add colour to your wordrobe.

Monaco blue

A shade that falls somewhere in between bright cobalt and sapphire blue with a shot of sparkle.Blue tonal colours looks great on almost all skin tone.i speacialy love this colour and every girl should have a A-Line silk dress as the perfect summer wordrobe staple.

Combine the colour with emerald for a fresh collegiate look.

Lemon zest

Another cheerful color for Spring 2013 I call this colour a optimistic sunshine colour.I some how want to dare myself to pair Lemon Zest with a navy blue , a light purple , or even black ;)

Simply carry this colour by wearing a printed t-shirts or fit and flare dresses !

Linen

A very similar colour to blush. This romantic colour is soft and elegant….such a classic !

Presently, we see a lot of ads on laundry additive, the most common one recently is fabric conditioners. The product promises to give life to your clothes after washing. Instructions on the product packaging shows that the fabric should be soaked after washing in a bucket of water plus certain quantity of fabric conditioner for 10 to 20 minutes. Certain fabric conditioners also have fruit or flower odour than remain even after wearing the fabric once or twice. The fabric conditioners are technically known was fabric softeners in the textile Industry.

Fabric softeners coat the fabric to increase its electrical conductivity, minimize static charges and decreases fabric stiffness. Some softeners incorporate compounds to minimize wrinkling during washing and drying. The types of fabric softeners include those added in the final rinse, those present in detergent, and those added in the dryer. The instructions for the use of any fabric softener need to be followed or problems may result. For example fabric softeners dryer sheets should be added to a cold dryer. If they are added to a warm or hot dryer, oil from the fabric softener may spot synthetic items. Fabric softeners have a tendency to build up on fabric as a result it may not be necessary to use a fabric softener every time a product is laundered. Every other time or every third time may be sufficient.

A zipper is a fastening device made with metal teeth or synthetic coils that make a complete closure by interlocking. There a different types of zippers available in the market. The type selected depends on the location of the zipper in the garment, the type of fabric and the design of the garment.

There are three basic types of zippers

The Conventional Zipper

The Invisible Zipper

The Separating Zipper

The Conventional Zipper

The conventional zipper opens at the top and has a stop at the bottom. This style is available in a variety of lengths, and is used in skirts, neckline openings, trousers, slacks, pants, finished edges of fitted sleeves, the centre seam of a hood to convert a hood to a collar, long sleeves opening and horizontally for design, such as in pockets. This zipper is used for garment styles that require a top opening and a bottom closure.

The Invisible Zipper

The invisible zipper is similar to the conventional zipper, but because of its special coils is sealed in the seam. This zipper is used in garments to give a smooth continues seam line, on the lower edge opening of fitted sleeves and also for a finished appearance of the garment , such as on matte jersey, velvet or lace.

The Separating Zipper

As the name implies the separating zipper is open at both ends and is usually available in light weight to heavy weight. This zipper is used on detachable hoods, to separate linings from dual season coats and jackets, on snowsuits and leggings and whenever two sections of a garment separate completely, such as on a jacket, coat, vest or parka.

AUTHOR & CONCEPT: MEENAKSHI

As an artist and designer I have always been looking for things which I can use to make art especially on a strict budget and when I can’t buy fancy supplies. My favourite thing is to recycle cardboards there are so many different ways to use them when working with painted surfaces and even on cloth to give textures.

Cardboard recycled from food wrapping aluminium foil can be used. Even toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls can also be used.

1. Use as a stamp.

Dip it in paint and use it as a stamp- it is a really quick and easy way to add circles to your surface. In the second picture mold ,bend or manipulate the cardboard into simple shapes to give beautiful surface to cloth or your canvas.

Inspired by my own creation start using your cardboard rolls to roll bubble wrap they make great polka dots.

2. Wrap yarn and roll texture on your surface.

3. Scrunch cling film wrap around a roll.

Once the is film wraped around a roll and cover in paint then roll it on the desired surface.

4. 3 D paints on roll.

One of my favourite and best done with (3D paints) paint the cardboard roll with desired design and while the paint is wet roll it across your surface it leaves a beautiful texture specially when used on clothes.

Rajish .K. Ravindran, student of Master in Design from NIFT, has created an interesting project on experiencial design. FDS is thankful to him for sharing the brief about the project for our Research category. I hope this article will benefit the fashion students working on experiential design projects.

PROJECT: Memorable visual experience inside NIFT, New Delhi Campus

The design brief is to create a memorable visual experience for NIFT New Delhi campus. Since the area for the design intervention is critical, foyer has been selected as it is a first impression and corporate image factor of the institute. For readers we would like to inform you, Foyer is the entrance near reception of National Institute of Fashion technology and students hangout at free time. Also foyer is an area inside the campus where people are welcomed, interact and depart from.

Taking design elements from ‘Sri Chakra’ the Indian worshipping tool, worked on design explorations. Sri Chakra is a worshipping tool used in Hindu religion, Buddhism and Jainism also. This representation believes to bring out positive energy, integrity and growth.

Mood Board

                                                                     Client Board

Sri chakra

Circle, Square, Triangle are used to project symbolically the various ethos related to the three main course streams of NIFT.ie Design, Management and Technology. These three geometrical shapes are further taken to graphic explorations along with Indian vivid colour palette and finally resulted creating a visual experience.

AUTHOR: MEENAKSHI HARSHANA

New project for easy marbleized paper we can make at home for different all purpose use. It is super easy and just need one product easily available in market. While personally trying this project I discovered the paper made out of this can be used for your design assignments and also for wrapping paper, tags, place cards and can be used on Christmas ornaments.

1. Start with a bucket or vessel large enough to fit your paper. Fill with about 2-3 inches of water in the vessel.

2. Using spray paint, mist the surface of the water (this should be done outside with lots of ventilation or while wearing a mask). Add more colour to the surface of the water.

3. Let the colours blend together, shake the bucket to break colour up or even use a stir stick to create swirls and designs.

4. Place paper onto the surface of the water and quickly remove. Spray paint, even on the surface of water dries

quickly so you have to work fast.

I used large sheets of water colour paper and found that using a more absorbent paper like water colour paper or card stock works best.

5. The result is a colourful, fast drying piece of marbleized paper to use in all kinds of projects. The coolest thing about this technique is that it can also be used on glass ornaments and the spray paint will dry permanent and not flake off! Simply dip the ornament into the surface of the colour ful water!

AUTHOR: MEENAKSHI HARSHANA

During a research programme on tie and dye in collage we figured out different ways of folding the fabric, for tie and dye, get the beautiful tie and dye effect. We came across many new techniques on how to fold the fabric. Today in this article I will share with you how you can create different pattern with different folding methods.

P.S – There is no particular method it’s all about creating with free mind, playing with colours and be creative. In this article the process of dyeing is not mentioned. To know about the dyeing process read more on http://www.fashiondesignscope.com/?p=5606.

Stripes:
Roll the fabric very loosely, foaming a long tube. The stripes will be at right angles to the tube. Tie at one inch intervals as far apart as you want the stripes to run. Loop impermeable bands or thread strings around the tube a few times and knot. Make sure the ties are very tight. Now you can immerse the fabric in tie and dye water.

Random Circles:
The random circles effect is made by tying knots with string, thread or elastic bands in different places. The more fabric is tied, the larger the circles. The less fabric that is tied, the smaller the circles..

Spirals:

Spiral fabric involve pleats of fabric arranged in swirls around a central point, gathered into a round bundle. Different wedges of the circular bundle are usually dyed different colours. Lay the fabric out on a flat surface. Place your thumb and fingers together on the cloth where you want the centre of the design to be. Start twisting so that you create a spiral. After each twist, flatten the fabric so that it stays flat. Be careful so that the folds don't rise or lump up. Bring the loose ends into the circle so it looks like you have a pancake. Secure with bands or string so they intersect, like spokes on a wheel. The spiral pattern takes a lot of practice. Trial and error is the best way to learn to tie dye. Make sure you're satisfied before you place the fabric into the dye. To make it little easy for the first attempt follow the direction in the picture.

Crumpled:
Lay the shirt flat on your work surface and gather it up into random wrinkles by spreading your fingers out and crumpling it up in a disc shape. You want to expose as much of the t-shirt to the dye as you can so make sure there are lots of little folds and wrinkles. When you have finished crumpling, wrap 3 or 4 imperable bands around the shirt. Apply dye randomly to the shirt using the squirt bottles. I used a combination of blue and pink for this shirt, but you could use several other colours as well.

Lightning Bolt:

Lay dampened shirt flat, face down. Smooth out any wrinkles, and align seams. Fold shirt in half vertically, again smoothing out wrinkles and aligning sides. Starting about the middle of the chest, fold shirt up to about the bottom of the sleeve, From about half-way between the bottom of the fold and the hem of the shirt, create another fold and bring it up to slightly overlap the first fold, Using a straight edge and a washable fabric marker, draw a diagonal line from a point between the neck and the sleeve to just above the hem, Starting at the bottom of the diagonal line, form accordion folds keeping the line straight as you go up to the shoulder. Accordion folds will be bulky due to the thicknesses of the horizontal folds. Use cotton string, sinew or rubber bands to secure the accordion folds from the line over toward the sleeve.

AUTHOR: PARAMITA SARKAR MAZUMDER

In FDS we try to introduce our designer friends with new technologies, which they can use for their design projects. Today we will talk about pad printing. I am really thankful to Mr Ashwani Mehta, one of the Directors at Spinks world for sharing with us how print can be transferred to any type of surface and material except plastic.

Mr Ashwani Mehta is very passionate about this work, constantly working with the Research and Development Dept to come up with new technologies and designer products. He shared with us his knowledge in this field and is very encouraging that upcoming designers can use pad printing as setting up a unit for pad printing is not that expensive and Spinks world also provides services and suggests how to set up a printing unit in an economical way. According to Mr. Mehta the technical term of the process of pad printing is also known as process of sublimation. This printing method is used for making customized gifts. I am sure almost everyone has seen the gift shops where they print customized images like motifs, personal photographs on mugs, watches, wall clock, pillow covers, wooden tray, etc.

Well we found this printing is easy and a whole range of products can be easily made for a design project. The technique is fast, quick and not messy.

Spinks world is a group of companies providing the customers with complete service and technical know-how has been the hallmark of Spinks India's strategy. Towards the same objective, the company has developed a printing and sales showroom in Gurgaon in the outskirts of Delhi, India. This 10,000sq. ft. facility has been designed to display and demonstrate the use of various products. It is fully equipped with all printing related facilities viz. plate making unit, blue zone, ink matching center, design studio, machine display and many others.
The center also boasts of its display unit for giving live demonstrations.

In the business of being different:

"Sealed ink cup" pad printing machines. Lasers for marking and engraving and other accessories related to lasers.

pad printing and screen printing inks for Indian Subcontinents & Middle East.

U.V. Compact disc printing inks.

U.V. Screen printing inks.

Conventional, but specialized pad and screen inks for plastics, glass, metal etc.

The Colour changing mugs are the latest experiential design products. The colour changes with temperature change. So as you pour hot tea, coffee, milk or any hot beverage in the mug, the colour changes. As you sip the hot beverage and after drinking as the temperature of the mug comes down, it regains it's previous colour. So in the entire process of drinking, hot beverage gives different experience to the person using the mug, unlike when the client uses a normal colour mug.

Most of the people visiting FDS enquires about the scope of fashion design. What they mean is after completion of the course what kinds of jobs are available. I have thought of writing a series of articles on the various job profiles in the fashion and apparel industry. In this article I have discussed the role of a merchandiser. I have seen after completion of the course many of my friends have joined as merchandisers in different organizations. The roles of a merchandiser may differ from organization to organization. This article will give you an idea how a merchandiser work in the industry.

The Merchandiser usually works with all departments in a company--- management, design, sourcing, production and sales to make sure the finished product is executed correctly and on time. The merchandiser should have enough knowledge for determining the target population, researching the market for current trends and predicting future trends. Merchandisers works with management and sales to develop a line plan and makes sales projections for each season. The merchandising department also supervises the creation of selling aids i.e salesman samples, swatch booklets, colour cards etc. In few companies the Merchandiser is required to give presentations to the sales force to familiarize them with the concepts of the line to help them pitch to retailers. In a large company a merchandiser or design director will head up this area with the help of one or more assistants. In a small company, the owner or designer will see to these responsibilities.

The design staff of a large company may have several designers, each with one or more assistants in a small company, the designer may work alone to perform all the duties. Some companies do not have a designated designer, instead this function is performed by the owner alone or in conjunction with a stylist who provides market research and general direction. The design staff ordinarily gets direction from the merchandiser or sketches. The best of these designs. The buyer chooses the final line form these samples. The Principals of the company, the sales people and the merchandising and design staff are all involved in this final selection process.
